Students are given a lot of writing assignments when they are in school or college and believe it or not, after some time they do get the hang of it. They are able to write essays and research papers without any problem except one: at times everything seems important and they have to make the tough choice of choosing what to include in the essay or any writing assignment and what to keep out.
While most students try to make their writing assignments as long as possible, it isn’t always the correct route to go. Some teachers like to read short essays because it saves their time and also shows that a student understands a topic. Always writing more doesn’t mean that you will get better grades, but one thing that can ensure top grades is quality.
If you usually find yourself in a situation where you have gone over the word limit and you have no idea how you can reduce the word count then don’t worry, it happens to the best of us. The good news is that there are a few points in mind that can help you to keep within the word limit. If you are interested in finding out what those points are then you don’t have to do much, you just have to read this article. So keep on reading.
Never use two words where one will do
This is what you need to remember if you want to keep the word limit: convert phrases into single words. This will help you a lot with the word count while still maintaining the overall coherency of your essay.
One thing that you need to remember is that you shouldn’t overdo it. Only replace the phrases that actually need to be replaced and leave the ones that can’t be.
Repetition is something to be avoided
You may think that there is no such thing as repetition in your essay, but if you look closely, you will find it. The best way to do that is to read your essay several times. Start by reading each paragraph twice or thrice and then you will see what you can cut out because of it being repeated.
Changing the voice can help
The magic of active and passive voice is that they can reduce the number of words if you use the correct one. If you find a sentence which is quite long then try changing its voice, i.e. if it is in the active voice, then convert it to passive voice and vice versa. If the number of words in the changed sentence is less, then you can include that sentence in your essay and take out the other one. But remember to do it for only the sentences which are quite long.
You have to cut
Sometimes we become too attached to what we have written and think that everything that we have written is necessary to the essay. You need to avoid this attitude if you really want to reduce the word count.
